Effective standards-based education systems require leadership focused on student achievement. By providing the structures, motivation, and supports for improvement efforts, leaders can establish a professional culture where core values and shared understanding of effective teaching practices result in improved teacher efficacy and student outcomes This section provides guidance and resources for understanding and beginning to build a standards-based education system.
Support Structures - Building Capacity for Change
The foundation of standards-based education is a system that is intentionally designed to support students and educators. This section provides guidance and resources to establish or improve structures that are designed to support educators with implementation of effective instructional practices and to support each student's successful completion of the standards and benchmarks.
Instruction and Curriculum - Planning and Assessing for Learning
The most important feature of a standards-based education system is the focus on continuous improvement of instructional practices, and the connections between academic standards and benchmarks, instructional practices, and curriculum cannot be overemphasized. It is critical that curriculum materials support the standards and benchmarks, but perhaps even more important is that the curriculum materials support teachers' use of effective instructional practices. This section provides guidance and resources to support planning for and evaluation of supports provided for teachers as well as for planning and assessment of student learning.
