Activity Directions: Technical and Adaptive Challenges

Description of the Activity

This activity provides a reading that will help to prepare the newly confirmed Leadership Team for the development of the processes and procedures that will be used by the team.

Objective

Develop shared understanding of adaptive and technical challenges.

Time

60 minutes or more

Preparation

1. Include this activity on an upcoming agenda of the newly confirmed Leadership Team.

2. Make printed copies the Handout: Technical and Adaptive Challenges Reading or ask participants to bring computers for electronic access.

Directions

1. Participants individually complete a reading of the Handout: Technical and Adaptive Challenges Reading document and record their thinking.

2. As partners, respond to the questions/prompts on the Handout: Technical and Adaptive Challenges.

3. Have participants share their responses/thinking with the large group. Some guiding questions might include:

a. What information stood out about the differences between adaptive and technical challenges?

b. What are the considerations and implications for the team in addressing each type of challenge?

c. What concepts need further exploration or clarification?

d. Identify examples of technical problems and adaptive challenges that have occurred in this organization.

e. Identify examples of when a technical response was applied to an adaptive problem.

4. As a large group, summarize the teams’ shared understanding of Handout: Technical and Adaptive Challenges.

5. Determine how this shared understanding will be communicated with stakeholders in regard to addressing adaptive and technical challenges. This understanding of technical and adaptive challenges will be used in the Activity Directions: Data Systems: Preparing for Analyzing and Responding to Data in the Data System Section.
