Activity Directions: Action Plan for Revising Curriculum

For more information about how to use this activity to support Curriculum Preparation, Develop plans for curriculum development, see the Action Overview: Plan Curriculum Development.

This activity develops a plan for curriculum development by reviewing the instructional practices that have been slated for improvement and planning to make adjustments in curriculum to support the instructional practices. It builds upon the action plan that was written to support instructional practices.

Objective

1. Plan the tasks to accomplish any needed revisions in the curriculum to support improved instruction and learning.

Time

60-90 minutes

Preparation

1. Select participants. In most situations this will be a leadership team, which might include representatives of each content area. These people could be representatives of the groups that engaged in activity 1.

2. Collect or provide access to the curriculum alignment charts.

Directions

1. Introduce the goal of the meeting and the Action Plan template that was begun in the Instruction Preparation: Plan Instructional Supports activity. Look at items that already have been included that relate to curriculum. This activity will provide more detail and may revise some of those actions.

2. Analyze the results of the Standards alignment study. Have participants respond to the following questions

a. What patterns are evident in the curriculum column?

i. Are benchmarks introduced, developed and mastered in a single unit or spread across the course/grade or multiple courses and grades?

ii. What other patterns are evident?

iii. How well does the curriculum align with the selected instructional practices and what changes might be needed? The group could refer to the results of the practice profiles activity in answering this question.

b. What patterns are evident in the assessment column? Consider the following:

i. Analysis of alignment of assessments and benchmarks in the scope and sequence (see curriculum alignment chart)

ii. A study of unit plans and student work for assessment of the benchmarks.

iii. Is a revision and/or creation common assessments necessary?

iv. The results of the Activity: Study of Current Assessment Practices can also be used to inform this analysis.

3. Set goals for needed changes in curriculum, including assessment. Refer to the Effective Educational Goals handout if needed.

4. Use the Action Plan Template to guide planning of the actions that will be used to accomplish the goals.
