Activity Directions: Action Plan for Professional Learning

Introduction

In this activity the leadership team further develops the action planning that was begun in Instruction Preparation: Plan Instructional Support to identify specific tasks for planning for professional learning across the organization. It builds on the activities of identifying professional learning needs and identifying professional learning designs. Those activities are a prerequisite for this activity.

Learning Objective: Plan the tasks to provide professional learning in support of selected instructional practices.

Time: 60 - 90 minutes

Preparation:

1. Provide access to the Professional Learning Needs Chart.

2. Provide a display of the selected Professional Learning Designs (e.g. chart paper or photograph).

3. Provide access to the Action Plan template.

Directions

1. Review the goals of the meeting and the Action Plan template that was begun in the Instruction Preparation: Plan Instructional Supports activity. Notice the items that were already entered that relate to professional learning. This activity will add more details and may revise previous planning.

2. Review results of activity 1 in which the team identified professional needs. Professional Learning Needs Chart

a. Set goals for meeting those needs.

b. Discuss the evidence that will be needed to demonstrate that the goals have been met?

3. Compare those goals to the professional learning designs that were identified in activity 2.

4. Discuss the feasibility of using the designs using these questions:

a. What are reasonable expectations for professional learning?

b. What is a practical delivery system for professional learning?

I. What resources are available and needed? (internal and external)

c. How can we sustain professional learning over time?

5. Determine the timeline and work plan.

6. Record the plan in the Action Plan template.
