Objective: Explore several professional learning designs

Exploring professional learning designs

Time: 45- 60 minutes

Preparation:  

1. Assemble materials: chart paper, three dot stickers or small sticky notes per participant, markers

2. Review and make copies of (or provide electronic access to) pages 7-17 from  Roy, P. (2013). School-Based Professional Learning for Implementing the Common Core. Oxford, OH: Learning Forward.

3. On chart paper list the following protocol options for learning design:

· Action research

· Author’s assumptions

· Co-teaching

· Collaborative assessment conference

· Common assessment planning tool

· Descriptive review

· Lesson study

· Peeling a standard

· Peer observation

· Say Something protocol

· Standards in practice

· Success analysis

· Three levels of text

· Tuning protocol

· Wagon wheel

Directions

1. Assemble the leadership team and provide time for individuals to read through the handouts describing various professional learning design protocols. Participants may wish to take notes on protocols.

2.  Instruct participants to:

· consider the pros and cons of each protocol

· determine their top 3-5 choices for providing professional learning in their setting

· be prepared to provide rationale for their top choices

3. Participants will be given three sticky notes and instructed to vote for their top three protocols. They may only vote once per protocol.

4. Once everyone has voted, discuss and record the pros and cons of the top 3-5 selections 

5. Retain materials for use in the Action plan for professional learning activity
